If doctors new what caused MS, they would be ahead of the game when it came to searching for a cure. MS is an autoimmune disease of the neuro-muscular system. Symptoms can often show up well before lesions do.
As far as what causes cancer, probably everything in the modern industrial/technological age. I've heard that smoking causes lung cancer and cell phones can cause brain tumors.
If there is a family history of some disease, then it's more likely to occur.
Some say that diseases are caused by something environmental, others say that family history has more to do with it. There's probably some truth in both theories.
