I had inflammatory ulcerative colitis and I finally found a permanent remedy for it. My family doctor referred me to a specialist who gave me a colostomy and determined that I should have surgery, which I did on January 23rd. of this year. This involved removing the complete colon and have my small intestines out through my abdomen. This is called an Ileostomy Stoma. (Many people have part of the colon removed and is reconnected to the rectum, in which case a colostomy or ileostomy is not necessary.
I am completely recovered within 8 weeks. The only thing I can not do is play contact sports other than that I can do anything - swim - run- physical labour etc.

This surgery is very common and relieves years of suffering from bowel disease and in some cases is a lifesaving procedure.

Tell your friend he/she will be able to wear "normal" clothes, (the same type of clothes he/she wore before surgery. And SEX-NO PROBLEM!

Good Luck to your friend.

I have not studied that particular disease, but have heard of it....I think it is a permanent
illness, treated with diet and meds.....he will have to talk it out with the doctors.

I dont think so

"UC"....there is no cure for that....My aunt suffers from the same thing. In the past it was very terrible for her....BUT her doctors put her on a new treatment and she seems to be responding well from it...I wish there was a cure for that.

" The weird thing is that I work in the "ER Dept" and I had a patient come in tonight with a UC flare up..."

Ulcerative colitis is curable. It's similar to crohn's disease is that it causes bowel ulcers, but with ulceative colitis, the lesions start in one place and spread upward. With Crohn's, they skip areas, and can occur anywhere. So, since the ulcers in UC are confined to one area, they can be removed, and therefore cured. The only cure for ulcerative colitis is bowel resection, in which they take out part of or all of the large bowel. Depending on which part of the bowel is removed, the patient may have to have a colostormy for the reat of their life. Colostomies are scary for the people who have them because it involveds having part of your intesting poke through the abdominal wall so that fecal material can drain. In my experience though, patients who got colostomies as a result of UC were so happy to be rid of the disease that it didn't matter that they had a colostomy. They usually try to hold off on surgery as long as they can, but your friend can discuss curative surgeries with his or her GI doc.
