Why is Patrick Swayze smoking when he has cancer?!
Question: I saw him smoking in front of his plane on his way to get chemo at some hospital and he was really going at it! Why doesn't he smoke something that will alter his mental state rather than smoking tobacco which does nothing but make you feel winded! He could easily smoke other things that would probably take stress away more for him. So why is he smoking?

Smoking is what got him pancreatic cancer. I guess since the statistics are against him for this type of cancer, he may just think why give up smoking? However, to do chemo and smoke, it is simply a bad combination. It can make his condition even worse and weaken his lungs and so on.
On a personal level, I am sadden by this news. I have enjoyed Patrick Swayze's work since the 80s. I was also sadden when Michael Landon passed away from Pancreatic Cancer.
As a cancer survivor, I did everything I could to beat it and two years later, I'm here, but the type of cancer I had has higher cure rate than his. I hope and pray he survives and when he does that he takes care of his nicotine habit.
He possibly knows that he is in the final chapter of his life book and is saying,Why Not". I would do the same if I was wearing his shoes and was a smoker.
well we could also ask why do overweight people still eat chocolate and add to their weight problem especially if they have a heart condition.
Why do alcoholics still drink even when dx'd with cirrhosis of the liver.
Why do people continue to drink and drive knowing they could kill themselves or others?
Its a matter of addiction and personal choice and not up to us to judge him or anyone else for their actions.
Well, I don't know Patrick Swayze so it would be impossible to really tell you why he is smoking but as we all know nicotine is a highly addictive drug, some say moreso than heroine. Also, it has a calming effect. The smoker feels like a cigarette relieves stress levels. As I am sure, Mr. Swayze is all stressed out right now. Other smoking might be beneficial for him in the future or now, but he does not have lung cancer and he probably feels the cigarette is his one enjoyment right now. Just guessing.
It's too late for him to worry about smoking now. It's not going to make a difference to his outcome. It's sad, but he will die from this cancer. So what difference does it make? None. He gets pleasure from it, so why not.
I see that at least one person here thinks that smoking causes pancreatic cancer. Just ignorance, that's all. That is why she gets all the thumbs-down!
