A severe viral infection will occasional cause wide temperature swings, including extremely high temperatures and sub-normal temperatures. It is not uncommon for a viral infection to cause extreme temperatures for up to 5 days. Children tend to run higher temperatures than adults and although they are uncomfortable, they do not often cause medical problems. Convulsions occasionally occur with rapid rising high fevers, and although they are scary, they do not cause lasting damage either.

People will tell you that a fever over 104 is life-threatening ... this is not true. A fever over 104 needs to be checked out by a doctor if it won't come down after 2 hours of home treatment, but lasting damage to the brain doesn't actually occur until the temperature gets above 107!

As long as you keep a close eye on your nephew's temperature, do what is necessary to keep his temperature as close to normal as possible, and use the doctor as a good resource, your nephew will be fine. If this is a virus, only time will help it get better.

Dear go and get the kid check by a good doctor. Might be due to overdose of anti-biotic

Better for the Dr. to find this one out.........there are a million reasons this could happen, but it has to do with temperature regulation (thermoregulation). But like I said a million things could set that off.....Good luck hope he feels great soon

why...........are you wasting time looking for answers here for such an important issue?

First of all - this is for a doctor who has seen your nephew. If he is under medical care and you're just curious as to the "why" aspect . . . it could be that your nephew's hypothalamus in his brain that controls his temp. is a little shocky from the high fever. The fever is the body's way of fighting like mad against infection. With such an extremely high temperature, it might take the hypothalamus a little time to figure out that he should be 98.6.

Then again, it could be a whole mess of other things, some of which are serious. If his doctor is aware of all of this and doesn't seem concerned, it will likely pass. If his doctor doesn't know about the low temp - please call his doctor.
