Is there a cat that causes less allergic reaction than others?!
Question: I am aware that they have geneticly engineered a "hypoallergenic cat", but I am wondering if there is a certain breed that would not affect my allergies as bad as others. I get allergy shots, and take allergy medication, but I am severely allergic and still have some pretty unpleasant symptoms.
I have had different breeds of cats and they have had different affects on my allergies, one affected me more than the other.
Anyone know if there are some breeds known not to affect allergies as bad?

Jemie: Except for the engineered cat, all other cats produce a protein (Fel D1) in their saliva and their urine. The amount of the protein produced can very from animal to animal within a breed and some studies have shown that black cats produce more than white cats.
Anyone that tries to sell you a hypo-allergenic cat is just trying to take your money, because they all produce Fel D1. The reason not all cats affect you the same is that each cat is individual. Each cat produces different amounts of this protein, and some cats groom more than others so they spread it more. If you are trying to get along with an existing cat, then try Allerpet/C. It is a solution that you rub on the cat once a week to denature the protein. Simply, yes. A shorthaired breed of cat will typically aggravate allergies less, unless it has bad dander.
I'd reccomend a devon rex. If you find them and other cats with supershort or no hair ugly as many do (can't blame you, I like the fluffies myself) then maybe a normal shorthaired breed like a Havana, Egyptian Mau, or Siamese.
a cat picture works well. it's not worth a cat's life to bring one home and then have to get rid of it at a later date for health reasons -go to any pound and see the results of poor pet owner decisions.

If you get a short haired cat that doesn't lick or drool and that you can shampoo on a regular basis you might be okay.
