How can you lower your blood glucose number fast?!

Question: a friend of mine just called me all hystarical asking me how he can get his blood glucose number down from 321 into his normal range when he has already taken his dosage amount of humalog insulin? I told him to call his nurse and see what they say, anyone else have any other suggestions? Please no bashing, negitive or idiotic remarks. Thanks

It's always good to consult your psycisian first. I have to agree with the post before mine. It really depends on how long ago he took his insulin and how much he had for dinner. Some exersise does help bring it down. But if the sugar as been high for an excessive amount of time it could hurt him. If he were to do a correction bolus of insulin it could cause a low. I'm no expert but I'd have to know a little more information. I would hate to see him have an extreem low.

** Please let us know that he's doing ok?**

Go for a walk (light exercise) or get a massage. Both get the blood flowing and helps bring your sugar levels down quickly.

Good luck!

How long has it been since he's had his insulin? I wait at least 4 hours with my daughter, unless she has ketones and then I would give her extra at 2 hours.

I've been told that use exercise with caution when sugars are that high. If ketones are present then exercise will make blood sugars go up instead of down.

Tell your friend to relax ... that massage sounds like a good idea :o) but anything he finds relaxing will do. Stress causes the liver to release additional sugar - even if your body doesn't need it. So if he stresses out about his high sugar, he is only going to make it worse.

--edit--

I forgot to mention, my daughter takes humalog.

have your friend do some exercises... my son does wrestling moves and dances .. even walking brings your blood glucose down to better levels.. I jsut asked my 8 year old what to do when his blood levels are up to get them down and he said "get active "... she will feel much better... good luck ...
