Diabetic and cinnamon capsules?!

Question: I keep hearing about diabetics who use cinnamon capsules to lower blood sugar. I thought sugar was bad for us. So how does the cinnamon work.

Answers: I keep hearing about diabetics who use cinnamon capsules to lower blood sugar. I thought sugar was bad for us. So how does the cinnamon work.

Cinnamon is not a sugar, it is a spice, as such it carries no caloric value whatever. How it works, and why it works for some people, and not others is not understood, it has not been studied because obviously cinnamon cannot be patented so there is no money in it. Some diabetics swear it lowers their blood sugars, others say it does nothing, whether or not it works has not been studied in depth.

Cinnamon doesn't have sugar in it. It's from the bark of a tree and it's only sweet when mixed with sugar or other sweetener. The capsules people take to help with their blood sugar levels are just capsules filled with cinnamon and although it's not certain how it works, it does seem to help some keep their blood glucose in check. I don't believe it has any side effects anyway, so I believe it's worth trying if you need help controlling your BG. I am type II diabetic, I take metformin once a day and cinnamon capsules in the morning. Just be safe and check with your health care provider to be sure. You can just consume cinnamon in and on things you eat, but the amounts needed to help are kind of significant and cinnamon isn't that yummy in large amounts on or in most food!

Cinnamon is considered by most people as a sweet spice. It actually has no effect on reducing blood sugar. It simply tricks our mouth into thinking sweetness so an extra dash of cinnamon tastes sweeter and the amount of sugar added to something can be reduced.
