QT interval and what can they do?!

Question: I went to the ER on Friday cause my heart was really palpating. I got dignosed with hyperactive thyroid and thought the palpations were from the thyroid but at the hospital..they said i have with QT interval of the heart. They said one part was longer than the other. What exactly is this?
They wanted me to stay in the hospital for tests but i refused as i have 2 kids to take care of so i wore a halter monitor friday and tomorrow i will be going back to the cardiologist for the results..do you think he will try and stick me in the hospital? What can they do for my condition anyways?

Hyperthyroidism can cause palpitation and irregular heart beats in and of itself. Long QT is an abnormality found on the electrocardiogram that indicates en electrical abnormality of the heart that can predispose to serious forms of irregular heart beats or arrhythmia. Sometime this is the result of metabolic abnormality or drug therapy. If no cause can be found there may be an inherited predisposition to this problem. Because these arrhythmias can be very serious they are often treated nowadays with an implanted pacemaker that can sense and correct the arrhythmia if and when it occurs. Pretty complicated stuff--write your questions out beforehand and quiz your doctor until he clarifies the situation to your satisfaction.
