Allergies and Asthma?!

Question: I have allergies and asthma. What causes the trigger of my runny nose, cough, and sinus pressure when the temperature changes? I get sick when it is 42 degrees one day and -20 degrees the next. It happens when the seasons change. I also need to know how to convince my mom to stop smoking around me. I have asthma and she has smoked around me since I have been in her belly.

Thanks!

Drew: Your asthma is caused by your allergies. Your allergies are caused by a defect in your immune system. It does not properly identify many common harmless proteins. Instead of seeing the protein as harmless, it sees it as an evil enemy invader. When this happens your body has a special immunoglobulin (IgE) that makes some special cells in your blood called mast cells produce histamine. When this happens your bronchial tubes swell and constrict. That is why you can't breathe during an asthma attack. Your rescue inhaler opens those passages back up and decreases the swelling. When you Mom smokes around you, the chemicals in the smoke cause the same thing to happen. If she doesn't care that she is wrecking her own health and shortening her life, you should let her know that she is increasing the likelihood that you will have a severe asthma attack. Hopefully she loves you so much she will be willing to battle her addiction to nicotene or at least step outside to smoke. Print this answer out and show it to her.
