A Cardiac Cath is a common procedure...

When a patient is showing symtoms of a blockage... such as poor circulation to the body or the brain , the doctors will insert a catheter into the femoral atery in the groin area... Radio opaque type Dye is administered so that they can view how the blood flows throough the arteries and the heart. They can take pictures by doing this and visualize the blood flow. This will show them where the blockage is... and how severe the block is. If very severe, like 90% blocked they will remove it using another type of procedure.

That in a nutshell is my explanation... sorry I was in a hurry.

Ive cared for many patients who have gotten a cardiac cath... its pretty safe! Not to worry!

It's actually called cardiac catheterization. Cardiac catheterization is a medical procedure used to diagnose and treat certain heart conditions. A long, thin, flexible tube called a catheter is put into a blood vessel in your arm, groin (upper thigh), or neck and threaded to your heart. Through the catheter, doctors can perform diagnostic tests and treatments on your heart.

Sometimes a special dye is put into the catheter to make the insides of your heart and blood vessels show up on x rays. The dye can show whether a material called plaque (plak) has narrowed or blocked any of your heart
