This is really strange...?!

Question: my mom has never had any problems with blood sugar levels or diabetes. But oneday she was eating some sweets kind of through the day everything was fine. But in the middle of the night, she had like some sort of mini stroke. She had gone to the Dr's and had a glucose test done and every thing was fine. Now she says that sometimes the tip of her toe when she stands on it a lot has no circulation, and then when she sits down the circulation comes back. Also, she told me that sometimes she'll be out and she feels confused and weak. She has had several blood tests and the Dr's have not once mentioned diabetes to her. What could be the problem?

your mother is having something called transient ischemic attack.which is best described by your own expression it is a mini-stroke with no premenant damage.

What happens is your moms arteries are propably not functioning well. diabetes can be part of this but there are other causes. so these arteries aren't working well. which means some organs get some transient decrease in blood supply. when this happens the organ doesn't function well.

In the brain when this happen this may cause symptoms like confusion or even transient paralysis of one limb or more. In the real stroke the blood supply get completely blocked and so part of the organ may die. but in the TIA the blood supply is decreased.

The problem with this is that these bad arteries have a higher tendancy to get completely blcoked and so causing a real stroke. the treatment opetion include, first the use of a blood thinner like low dose aspirin to keep the blood more fluid and so ensure good blood suply. the other part of the treatment is to check the arteries and find out if there are correctable abnormality like some people would have a localzed narrowing on one of the big arteries in the neck that is supplying the brain and so a surgeon or a neurologist may put a stent in it or replace the narrow segment to improve the blood flow.

What you mom need to do is to go to a neurologist who will order some tests to check for brain circulation and see if aspirin will be suitable for her. the neurologist may or may not refer her to vascular surgeon if needed.

nothing to do with diabetes, maybe her blood pressure, she needs to see her doctor again

you said she had a tia. that could cause any and all of her problems. As for her toe, she probably needs better shoes. all of those problems could also be caused by being overweight, if she is

Have you or your mother asked for the blood test results? You always need to ask for a copy of them. For yourself or for your mother.

These can tell you a lot more than your doctors are willing to divulge or maybe know. The doctors are rushed so don't always go over the results as carefully as them should.

My doctors send me the results immediately they recieve them so I can go over them then we can discuss them intelligently together at the next appointment.
