Does anyone here have psoriasis and what do you do for it or take as meds for it!

Question: I have it. You can use over the counter things, many of which use tar as the active ingredient. It smells like a road, but it works alright. Mine's a little too severe, in some places, for that so I use this stuff my doctor gave me a prescription for called triamcinolone, which is a topical steroid ointment. However, there are a bunch of different things you can take and different things work for different people depending on the severity of the condition. My advice would be to go to the drugstore and try out some various over-the-counter medications (give them at least a couple weeks to start working). If those don't work then go to a doctor and ask about getting a prescription for something a little stronger. Either that or you can go to the doctor first and get an opinion on whether or not you should even bother with over-the-counter meds (my doctor had me go straight to the prescription triamcinolone).

Ok, this might sound crazy, but I have a friend who has it bad on her head. She was told to use vicks vapor rub. She did it and it has helped. She hasn't found much else that helps.

You have many alternatives when it comes to psoriasis. First id try tar based products such as Neutrogena T-gel + the conditionner that is also made by Nautrogena to control the itchyness. If this is unsuccessfull, your doctor could prescribe Hydrocortisone based scalp lotions, which tend to work well.

I had atopic dermatitis for bout 4 months (it's the same thing as psoriasis, just around the eyes) and I heard that milk of magnesia worked if applied topically. I swear to you it worked. I don't know why, but after trying everything, that was the only thing that made it dissappear

I have it on my scalp, on my elbows and knees, a little bit on my shins, and a little bit on my hands. Ohhhhhhhhh such a pain in my rear! I can tell you I use different things and change it out so my body doesn't get used to it. The worse thing you can do is use a steroid cream because if you ever stop or take a break from it your psoriasis will explode and it never did much for me anyway. If you're looking for some things to try over the counter or at home I'll give you some that I've tried that works for me or for others I've talked to.

I'll give you a few suggestions you can try.

I am going to try this one since I just heard about it. Soak your elbows in vinegar or apple cider vinegar for a few minutes and then wrap it with a pad soaked in warmed olive oil. I'd suggest doing this in the evenings before bed so it can really soak in. This would make a great nighttime soak.

Also, you can go for lotions that really create a barrier and keep your skin from being exposed to dry conditions etc like Vaseline Intensive Care lotion twice a day. That one really gave me some relief and helped keep my plaques under control.

Sunlight or UV rays is touch and go for people but make sure you use sunscreen on the areas of the body that isn't covered in plaques while in the sun or rays since our skin is different than the average skin types out there. You definitely don't want to cure psoriasis to end up with skin cancer! If you DO want to try this method make sure to cover all of your skin with sunscreen except for the skin with psoriasis and only go in for 15 minutes or so since our skin is different than "normal" skin and you dont' want to injure your skin and make the condition worse.

I have heard of people having success with rubbing vitamin e oil *just take vitamin e capsules, break them, and rub the oil on the plaques* and then bandaging it.

The main thing is to keep the areas moist or protected from drying out. If you do keep the skin moist just be really careful to watch for infection since we get it easier than other people. Let the skin dry but not dry out between applications of different products! I hope that gives you a few things to try so you don't feel at your wits end with it. The main thing you need to know is not one thing is going to work for everyone so try a few different ideas to find what works for YOU and good luck!
