There are a few varieties:
Standard crunch is pretty obvious and easy. You can also do a variation where your knee is flexed to 90 degrees and your leg is parallel to the ground. Those together will work both the upper and lower abs.
Side crunches: Just lay on your side and crunch up towards your hip. These will work the lateral part of your abs.
Torso Twist: Ladies love the external oblique muscles. Those are on your hips and point down at a 45 degree angle towards your pubic area. Holding any kind of weight on a bar on your shoulders and then twisting your hips while standing will work those muscles.
Bicycle crunch: Lay like a normal crunch. Put your hands behind your head and hold your legs up at 90 degrees. Move your legs in a slow bicycle motion and as one knee comes towards your face, touch the opposite elbow to it. This exercise will work every single ab muscle at once.
Running is also great for building lean muscle in the abdominal region. Combine all these and do them consistently for weeks and you'll see great results.
