I'm pretty sure one of my best friends is a compulsive liar. Help!?

Let's call my friend..."Erin" for now. I've known Erin since the start of yr 7 and her

Over the past yr that I've known her the stories she's been telling are getting to the point of unbelievable or just plain lies. When we had a week of work experience she'd had"two of her articles published", she also, "interviewed Jessie Mccartney", went to a "book premiere with celebrities, she's babysat for Steve Irwin's kids on holiday, shes family friends with Cate Blanchette and the list goes on. Now I'm worried about her mental health, she seems to actually believe these things. Recently, the biggest and probably worst lie she told was that she met a guy my age, with the same last name. Little did she realise there are only 20 people in my city with this last name, all related to me and I KNOW she is lying. I feel I need to speak up now before its too late!

Help! How can i confront her? I'm scared she's mentally unstable and I need to help her! I cant believe anything she tells me!

Just to add onto this, she is crafty. She will almost always come up for an reason why it is true. When I see her parents they are somewhat a bit controlling but not extreme as to what I can see. She's also had boyfriends who she sees but we never see for 3 months then he "moves" mysteriously, and I txted her about getting this guy with my last name's home phone number, she ignored it and replied with a completely different unrelated txt.

I want to help her, and I feel helpless. She lies about exam marks, she says she is gluten intolerant yet I have seen her, with my own eyes eat completely gluten filled bread, yet she just brushes it off, telling me "it's fine, i've checked, it's gluten free". It was normal bread. She ate it.

I know someone like this.
I don't think she believes it.
She wants YOU to belive it.
SHE wants to belive it.- but she doesn't.

She feels so little about her self- and craves success and adolation so much- she is willing to lie to try and obtain it.

Even if you catch them- correct them- they will just get angry- or avoid the question.

Another person I was exposed to in the past claimed he drove a race car at 900 miles an hour- which someone else listening to the conversation pointed out was faster then the speed of sound (769 MPH) and in the same conversation said that he was pushed through a stain glass window and recieved over 1000 stitches.

They don't realize how damaging this is to them. They try to impress- but they do just the opposite. After a few minutes with them you think even less of them then if they just kept thier mouth shut.

You would have to be a really really good friend- one they were very very close to , to let them know how much damage this is doing to them.

The thing is- this action is a wall they put between them and you- so that you cannot see the "Real" them.

People I know that are like this- are like this for their entire lives.

She needs professional help- not because she belives this - but because she thinks it's benifiting her in someway.

It's going to damage her socially, economically (what boss will want a nutjob that tells stories)

The person I know finally got married. My guess is she was the first person he slept with.

I understand why she married him-she is JUST LIKE HIM. she tells stories too.

I just read your addtional comments- how funny! The person I know had a controling father. I wonder if that is a component in this puzzle?

He had a mysterious girlfriend too- accorind to him they did all the weird kinky things any teen boy would dream of- accept she is DEAD.
I guess it was a real person- but he had no real relationship with her- and no way to prove otherwise when the person is deceased.
