Can you force someone into rehab?!

Question:

Can you force someone into rehab?

Long story short my mom (she is 51 years old) is a raging alcoholic and is slowly killing herself. She now weighs about 100 pounds. She is not eating at all, just drinking. She has two dui charges against her which she is still going to court on. Can I force her into a rehab center? Do I need to obtain a power of attorney? If so, how do I do that without her permission?

Answers:

Dear Turtle.....I think everyone here has been "right on" with their answers. Forcing someone into rehab just doesn't work. The rate of recidivism for people who go willingly is already very high. Those who are forced into it generally continue their destructive behavior once they get out. Sometimes they use their anger over the situation to justify. The best thing you can do is what someone else answered and that is to go to some Al-Anon meetings. This will help you learn how to cope and teach you that you are not to blame for her behaviors. You have to be really strong to endure and it is best if you hear people who are going thru the same situation and how they deal with it. best wishes to you
