Sometimes, I wish the internet didn't exist (serious addiction, what can I !

Question: Sometimes, I wish the internet didn't exist (serious addiction, what can I do?)?
The internet can be either your best friend, or your worst enemy. If used properly, it can become a super encyclopedia of knowledge . . . Unfortunately, the internet is not really my best friend at this point in time. I'm 18, in college, and so far I still have good grades. So far...

I have spent over ten hours at the computer looking up fascinating psychological concepts instead of doing homework or studying. Is there something I can do to stop me from the temptation of doing that when I'm typing a paper on word?

Answers:

Put a clock in front of you. If your goal is just 1 hour a day, then that's it. Once you set the clock for one hour and it rings, turn off the computer, get up and go outside.

An addiction is one where you cannot have any control. But we all have control. It's what we do with it that works. Some people say they can control something, but they don't. It's just words.

You have to take an effort to stop something. So try the clock routine and you will be fine. Under no circumstances EVER go on line to chat! It's the most boring, time wasting thing ever!!! And so hard to control! So don't ever start that in your life.

Remember how life was before the internet? Tap into that thinking and the internet will be there for you when you are ready, not the other way around.

Only allow yourself a certain amount of time to be looking up fascinating concepts, or things not related to school. School's your priority... so make it your priority. Allow yourself a half hour, and then pretend the internet doesn't work. Just work on your paper offline and pretend you can't go on the internet.

Fact is, google teaches more than school. Why? You get to choose what you want to look up, and when knowledge is involved, you will become a master in your history of google searches. I know I have. As a matter of fact, earlier this year, anyone who talked to me said I'm stupid, yet in the past few months, they come to me for technical support. I'm 15 and know more than many adults, and all my teachers combined.

Google

If you know you dont want to do it, then just dont allow yourself to do it and stay strong about it, get yourself involved with something else instead.

=D

Write your essay or whatever on a piece of paper then type it up on a computer that doesn't have Internet. Also maybe you should consider a degree in psychology

Self control is going to be your best bet. Turning the internet off somehow by unplugging or using that switch on laptops could help. I have a similar problem.
