If i get diagnosed as bipolar do i need to meds for the rest of my life to funct!
Question: If i get diagnosed as bipolar do i need to meds for the rest of my life to function normally?
Answers:
Yes, unfortunately Bipolar Disorder is not curable and requires that you take management medication for the rest of your life. Stopping your medication can cause side effects that make you feel even worse physically and mentally. If you choose not to take medication, your illness may escalate as it continues until the range of your emotional symptoms is greater and the normal periods in between episodes are virtually nonexistent.
Your psychiatrist will assist you in finding effective medication. Often us Bipolar people need more than one medication to stay stable. Most often this means an antidepressant and a mood stabilizer daily. It may take a long time, possibly a year or two, to find and effective combination and dosage of medications.
Just remember that the medications will be there to make your life better. It isn't shameful to take medication every day. There are plenty of people who need to do so for a variety of illnesses; Bipolar Disorder is one of those illnesses.
Good Luck! Hang in there; it will get better. It will all be okay.
