Are compulsive liars insane?!

Question: Are compulsive liars insane?
I feel like every person I've ever met who lies a lot are always the most insane. Could anyone give me an explanation for this. Or does anyone agree or disagree?

Answers:

As someone who is an former pathological liar, i can tell you that we are not necessarily insane, but we do have severe mental problems that cause us to feel it necessary to lie even when it would be just as easy to tell the truth. Some of us are such capable at the lies that we can believe them ourselves, which could be taken as a form of insanity.

It stems from a sense of worthlessness and powerlessness. In the homes we grew up in we weren't respected and told how much of a burden and crap we were. So we lie to ourselves to make it through, and then we begin to live those lies. For example since i was always seen as weird by other people, i would just explain that i was from another country, and that usually got them off my back. I did it to make myself feel better. Some people lie cause they want to feel important. They may feel like a failure in life and explain things they did when they were younger or exaggerate things.
Really its like breathing for me if i really wanted to, ive had so much practice. Its a survival mechanism, but in the adult world, to keep it up is to not have fullfilling life or relationships, and that is when it becomes a problem.
When you meet people like that, you need to ask yourself if the lies they are telling are to get out of trouble or get their way, or is it just habitual, or for making conversation. If its the former two, stay away, if its the latter two or anything else thats harmless, you need to ask yourself if you still want to be friends with taht person knowing theyre like that. They have to mature in their own time and overcome their weaknesses.

A compulsion to lie is not, in and of itself, a form of insanity. It is associated with certain mental disorders related to any number of medical and psychological issues. Can an insane person be a compulsive liar? Yes. Can a compulsive liar be sane? Yes.

You also must understand the difference between being a compulsive liar and just someone who lies a lot. A compulsive liar will lie about things they don't even need to lie about. If you ask them "Hey, did you have a hamburger today?" they will lie about it for no reason. People who simply lie a lot choose their lies for their own benefit. Like this: "Hey, we're supposed to be on a diet, did I see you eating candy?" They will lie and say "No" because they know it was wrong of them. That's an issue of dishonesty. Though there could be psychological issues with their dishonesty, it doesn't make them automatically insane, just not trustworthy.

It depends on how you are using the word 'insane'. In legal terms that is a difficult thing to prove, insanity.

lying is a personality defect... not a mental illness.
