The reason people think that is because people are ignorant to that which they do not understand!.
Only in recent years has it become more "acceptable" for people to suffer from mental illness, but its nowhere near to as it should be!.!.!.NO BIG DEAL!
I think your question is an excellent one, hopefully people will read it and understand that what you say is true, it is an illness, not a disease!. In no way does it mean mentally ill people are "crazy"!.
However, people are mean, if they dont understand it, they are afraid of it, so they label it as crazy!.
I had an awful experience when i was younger, which i only just survived, and people cannot understand how i have been able to recover from it,
e!.g!. Dr's, they read what has happened to me, and question how its possible that i am not "losing it" all the time, they dont understand how i could have survived such a horrific experience and that i have now recovered from that and am able to enjoy my life!.
Of course the memories will never go away, but that doesnt mean i "must be mad" because of it!. In fact i think i am only the person i am today, BECAUSE of it!.
I actually believe that from great sadness comes great strength!. From my own sadness i am able to help others because of that pain!. People who survive Mental health problems and come out of the other side, have more of an understanding of self than those that never experience it!.
Although, i wish the bad stuff didnt happen to me,
now, i can see that it has actually enabled me to be able to help others!. So great positives can come from the most negative experiences!.
Good for you for bringing the question up, it could well change someones perspective and that is invaluable

I think more than people thinking that mental illness means psychosis is the fact that they also think that people with mental illnesses can simply "change" how they feel or act!. For some reason, if your not bleeding profusely from somewhere, you don't really have a problem!. They don't realize that it's mostly an imbalance in brain chemistry and the only thing that can change brain chemistry is medicine!. Then again, medicine isn't always the answer!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

ppl think/beleive or act that way towards those with mental illness bcuz they are using bias and don't understand or know the person enough or personally to know they arn't "crazy"!. Thats all that it is, once these labels like schizo!. bi-polar etc are placed on ppl, some ppl will view them with bias!. Like i said, not all but some!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Mental illness is just that an illness!. I think people use the word "crazy" because they don't understand it, or don't know someone with a mental illness!. Its too bad people get judged like that!. With right treatment an illness can be handled and a person can go on to live a normal life!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

i think people think that people are "crazy" when they have a mental illness because what is portrayed on TV and in the movies!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
