How hereditary is Schizophrenia?!

Question: How hereditary is Schizophrenia!?
Does it depend on the kind or whether is is paternal, materal, or a certain generation!? I know it is something hereditary but how serious a risk would I be putting any potential children in if the situation is my maternal uncle has severe (but I'm unsure of what type) late-onset schizophrenia and my boyfriend has controlled early-onset!?

It's been on my mind a while!. It's a serious relationship but nowhere near having children yet!. I just need more information so I can base my future accordingly!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Answers:
The chance that a child will develop schizophrenia:
- if neither parents have it = 1 in 100
- if one parent has it = 1 in 5
- if both parents have it = 1 in 2 or 3

Therefore, schizophrenia is only partly genetic!. There are many other factors that may lead to it!. There is something called a 'diathesis-stress model' which says that a child may inherit the 'schizophrenia gene' but need an environmental cue (such as stress or marajuana) to trigger it!.

Either way, dont let it become an issue in your relationship and certainly do not let it stop you having chlidren!. There is plenty of help available if your child does develop schizophrenia and, as im sure you've seen with your boyfriend, it can be well controlled!.

schizophrenia is a hereditary problem!. i suffered from paranoia and anxiety problems as a teenager and if i had not caught it in time i would now suffer from schizophrenia!. many people in my family suffer from it but if treated early enough it can be controlled and your future children wouldn't necesarily have to go through it!. they would have a high chance of aquiring the genes, probably over 60% chance, but since you are aware of the chance you could take them for regular check ups and make sure they never stress too much or have anxiety problems!. if you keep an eye out for it and treat it straight away you have a very high chance of preventing it!. children are a gift and you shouldn't hold back from having them, but do understand that it will require your constant attention and care!.
good luck!. xWww@Answer-Health@Com

From personal experience, I have dealt with adults and children who are products of familes with schizophrenia, the best advice I can give to you it to avoid reproducing with someone who has a mental illness, This is something you would not want to put a child throughWww@Answer-Health@Com

Odds are higher than if your bf didn't have it!. How much is hard to say!. The critical factor is that any kids have a very stable and safe upbringing!. As far as I know, schiz is thought to need an environmental trigger for it to manifest!.
