Don't let the movies fool you!. It's not ALL padded walls and straight jackets!. There's a psychiatrist on call 24 hours!. I've been in 2, and in both, they allowed a smoke break once every 90 min!. Meals are served regularly like a hospital!. Visitation is very limited and to certain hours!. If you admit yourself, it's a mandatory 72 hour stay!. If you are admitted against your will, the court makes the decision as to when you get out!. The only way they can do this though is if they think you are a physical danger to yourself or someone else!. The extremely mental ARE kept in padded cells, but like I said, that's in very extreme cases!. If you really need help, try therapy!. If you've already done that, try meds!. If you've exhausted all of your options and still need help, think about a self admittance for 3 days!. I commend you for admitting you have a problem!. That's a very hard thing to do!. Good luck and I truely hope you get better soon!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

actually there are different types of mental hospital settings, , in a regular hospital the "psychiatric ward" is kind of like a dorm where there are rooms usually shared like roomates and your free to go in and out of the room into a living room area and communal bathroom etc, inside ofthat setting the days are spent doing group therapy, individual therapy and therapeutic activities such as artistic things!. People in that setting could have drug and alcohol dependencies, anorexia, depression with suicidal tendencies or previous suicide attempts, anger issues and some other problems, this setting does have a room or two for new arrivals in which they are observed for the first 24 hours who are suicidal or coming off of drugs or uncontrollably violent!. There are no straightjackets in therebut ifthe person is banging against the wall with their head ordoing really harmfull things they will be put into wrist restraints to the bed!. I dont know about institutions for the criminally insane, but I imagine its similar but much more supervised and secure!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

I've visited a couple of them!.

If it's a floor in a hospital, it will be the top floor!. If it's a dedicated psychiatric facility, the higher up you go, the higher the security, until you get to the forensic cases on the top floor!.

There are extra locks around the elevator!. You couldn't just take the elevator up, walk around, then push a button and leave on your own!. This measure is to keep the patients in, typically for their protection!.

Straitjackets are probably not used that often!. If a patient is out of control and likely to hurt herself or others, a straitjacket might be used until drugs take effect!.

I visited friends a couple of times in a low-security situation!. It is not a happy place!. Activities seemed to be adapted from elementary school!. One woman kept saying, as if commenting on the weather, that "we're all going to die"!. Generally, it was so bland and quiet a place that even as a visitor you'd feel a numbness, an uncomfortable boredom and a melting-away of any motivation whatsoever!. Another friend related her experience to me and said she realized that if she didn't pull herself together fast, she'd be there forever!. That realization was a sure sign of sanity and she was out of there, and better, very soon after!.

Then there was my visit to the forensic floor!. The orderlies were built like pro wrestlers!. Not the wimpy ones on TV, but the ones who might be the warm-up act at a dogfight!. Thank God they were around, because a few of the patients had probably killed to get locked up there!.

Still, if you could tune out the guy screaming, and the one with eyes like drill bits trying to suck your soul out of you (held firmly by two orderlies for a simple trip to the washroom - my close encouter with a real life Hannibal, maybe), you could still have a reasonable visit to cheer up a friend!.Www@Answer-Health@Com
