Jessica, I was put on your contact list for a reason probably; you know that you have a problem simply by the way you have described yourself in your question.

So..you have a couple of choices, because your illnesses are pretty far along; in other words, they will probably only get worse and switching to bulimia is not the answer. Like another said, it begins as a 'control" issue; like is someone in your life or something in your life left you feeling completely out of control of your own destiny and decisions?

There is only one way out, and it's counseling. You have a psychological disorder which is not caused by genetics. That being said, sometimes a medication may help, but therapy is more of what you need.

I have actually SEEN anorexics mess up their health so bad that if they drink a lot of water they blow up like balloons, they have messed up their kidneys so bad. They get fired from jobs, kicked out of school, etc, because it's so obvious that their weight is vastly under what it should be.

At 5'5" you should weight at least 110, depending on your frame, better at 120.

Seek help, and if you wish to keep it from your mother while you talk to a school counselor, you can....but the fact is your ailment is so obvious to people that look at you due to your thinness that it's not something you can hide for very long.

Once more; people do die from this disease, and it's not older women; it is young girls. It doesn't take long for the body to give up due to lack of food..

You need to see a doctor or a therapist. Trust me, you need some professional help.

you need to see a doctor. you can definately get help and get started back on tract to a normal life. its imporatnt that your healthy. to be honest i think that 97lbs is considered underweight for your height. i am 5'3' and i weigh 116 and i am pretty skinny...so i am sure that your nowhere near fat. you should get help soon ! im sure you will be happier after you do.
Good Luck

you need to see a doctor. this is actually quite common for adolescents to experience this. this type of condition is caused in part by a need to control something, and funny as it starts; it generally turns and in the end controls you. to sum it up, it is a deeper problem than it appears and you need counseling. you may not feel adequate or in control of your life, or maybe something else is bothering you that you can not control, i don't know. but get help!

It's important that you seek help as soon as possible. Anorexia nervosa can cause serious damage to your body, and the health issues connected to the disease are even worse when you throw up. You have to take care of your health, and losing more weight is not the way to do it. You're underweight, not fat. You have a distorded body image, which may be increased as your brain does not get enough food to function as it should. Your negative thoughts will because of this be increased.

You seem to have lost control, as your weight is that low. You may need someone to help you establish a natural relationship to weight and food again and to do that, you should talk to a doctor, school nurse or nutritionist. If you don't, the future of your life may not be as good as you wish it would be. You're having a harder time concentrating at school than before you got sick, and this will just continue and increase as your body gradually will get weakened.

Keeping an unhealthy low weight, may cause unwanted consequences for you later in life, such as bone problems and sterility or decreased chance of having a healthy baby.

There are also other serious health issues connected to your disease, and there is a chance that these will occur if you don't recover. Some of the health issues are:

Physical

* Stunted growth
* Endocrine disorder, leading to cessation of periods in girls (amenorrhoea)
* Decreased libido; impotence in males
* Starvation symptoms, such as reduced metabolism, slow heart rate (bradycardia), hypotension, hypothermia and anemia
* Abnormalities of mineral and electrolyte levels in the body
* Thinning of the hair (makes your hair look weird and ugly)
* Growth of lanugo hair over the body
* Constantly feeling "cold"
* Zinc deficiency
* Reduction in white blood cell count
* Reduced immune system function (increases chance of getting several diseases, usually harmless diseases like flue may put your health at risk)
* Pallid complexion and sunken eyes
* Creaking joints and bones
* Collection of fluid in ankles during the day and around eyes during the night
* Tooth decay
* Constipation
* Dry skin
* Dry or chapped lips
* Poor circulation, resulting in common attacks of 'pins and needles' and purple extremities
* In cases of extreme weight loss, there can be nerve deterioration, leading to difficulty in moving the feet
* Headaches
* Brittle fingernails
* Bruising easily

Psychological

* Distorted body image
* Poor insight
* Self-evaluation largely, or even exclusively, in terms of their shape and weight
* Pre-occupation or obsessive thoughts about food and weight
* Perfectionism
* Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
* Belief that control over food/body is synonymous with being in control of one's life
* Refusal to accept that one's weight is dangerously low even when it could be deadly
* Refusal to accept that one's weight is normal, or healthy

Emotional

* Low self-esteem and self-efficacy
* Intense fear about becoming overweight
* Clinical depression or chronically low mood
* Mood swings

Some of these causes of being underweight may sometimes not occur before you get older. Like for example bone problems

Other causes are loss of menstruation, risk of becoming sterile, stomach pain, delayed/abnormal puberty and wounds will also heal slower, and easier get infected, due to a weak immune system. And extreme underweight may cause other serious health issues.

Please talk to someone now, and tell them everything that's on your mind. They are there to help you.

Good luck:)
