valium is a controlled drug. it is basically used to calm you down. i use them when i go on planes, because i get very nervous!... go to web md, and search it, it will tell you everything you need to know, as far as effects dosages and side effects go etc!

kmax answered the question quite well, I would just like to add that it is highly addictive and should only be taken under a doctor's supervision. Because it is a sedative, it also slows down your heart rate and breathing and its effects are intensified by the use of alcohol.
