It will take a little while for the effects of the medication to set in. If you feel there is no good effect or outcome go straight back to your GP or Psychiatrist!

good thing about bipolar it does give you a lot of creativity - so start painting and writing it will be excellent! A good thing you can do anyway is doing regular exercise, if you have the time try at least 20 minutes a day walk briskly or jog outside in the daylight until you sweat a little bit and feel your heartrate goes up - in trials physical exercise significantly decreased levels of depression inducing disturbances of serotonin levels in the brain!

Your Psychiatrist should have talked about your illness and given you some information, if you haven't received much helpful information there is lots on the web. The more you know about it and about your medication the more likely it is that you can return to as normal a life as possible as soon as you can, but you first should accept that fact that it is your diagnosis, it doesn't make you any worse or different! God bless hope this is a little helpful

Doctor's think that if you aren't perfect, then something is wrong with you. Kids are too hyper so they drug them. Someone has a major mood swing so they drug them. It only leads to more serious side effects. If I were you, I wouldn't take it. I know someone that had a blood transmitted disease that was prescribed tons of meds, and she ended up turning into a completely different person. When she stopped, she was normal.

You shouldn't hate your life just because you are bipolar. I have two bipolar friends and they are great. You can learn to control it without some stupid meds. =]

i take topiramate to along with other drugs! but i take it for migraines. i still know how awful side effects can be though! youve only been on it for a week so dont worry just yet you should give it atleast 2 maybe 2-4 weeks before your body adjusts to it. then if your still not happy with it, call your doctor and tell him your side effects. He'll probably change the dose or the medication. That is VERY normal. its unusual to get the right combination on the first try!

in the mean time it will help to write down all your side effects somewhere so you can remember them all when you talk to your doctor or track the severity and occurence of them. Also, you should have gotten an info sheet or something with the topiramate, so read that! it has a list of side effects and what to do if you come across them!

hope this helped! good luck with all this!

I've had friends with bipolar disorder that have taken months (one took a few years) to get the dosages right. But hang in there - it's worth the effort, according to every one of them. Once you get your dosage adjusted you'll have the same boring little mood swings everyone else has.
