Depressed and lonley?!

Question: I always hear people talk about what a great time college is but for me it isn't. I hate my major and have no clue what I want to do with my life. I'm intimidated by my more intelligent/ambitious classmates who seem to think it's weird that I don't know what I to do. As a result, I have absolutely no friends whatsoever. On the top of that, I haven't really slept these past few weeks. And when I do, I have this nightmare of ending up old, alone w/ no friends or significant others, and never having had a decent career. Just that nightmare alone makes it hard for me to sleep since that truly is the worst thing I can ever picture happening to me. I don't know what to do. I'm so scared, lonely, and depressed.

P.S. Please don't tell me to join a club since it never helps me make friends (trust me, I've tried). And I don't want to change my major since I don't know what I want to study and I'm burned out.

Hey
People in college are so serious and career-driven, that it can make you think constantly about what you want to do in life.

When I was in college, I didn't know what I wanted to do, indeed after college I did a Masters in something I didn't like, I worked in a job after that that I found boring and monotamous. Now 3 years after leaving college I have found a job(being a French translator) related to my studies that I like :)

We all fall easily into the trap of constantly measurng our looks/life with that of everybody else, when we should be concentrating on our own lives rather than being fixed on everybody else's lives.

We all started off at the same starting point, some take longer to get to the Finish line, but we all get there in the end.

don't worry, things will work out, most people don't know what they want to do with their lives at that age. You're just growing up

Complete your major if you can. Don't stress about what you want to be. Always trust that things happen for a reason and what is meant to happen will happen.

Enjoy every moment. Life is short and don't worry about your career it is not everything. What is important is you being happy and you can be happy right now. Be happy that you have food, shelter, be happy for even the little things and you will feel much better.

What's you're experiencing about stress related to college life and trying to plan for the future sounds pretty normal actually.

The fact is a lot of students, even some of those you're referring to who seem to know what they want to do with their majors, really don't know anymore than you do. Most people, myself included, end up in professions that have little to do with what was actually studied in college. The key is to try and find a field of study that has some elements in it that you personally find interesting, and just go for it.

Besides finding classes that you "love" lol, consider a hobby or outside interest that will keep you busy and occupy your mind enough that you're not worrying all the time ("See? And you thought I was going to tell you to join a club or something lame like that." lol). Be sure that you're "eating right"; a lot of college students live on less-than-nutritious diets of fatty foods and caffeine that can contribute to physical and emotional stress. And finally, try and get some sleep. Lack of sleep also contributes to stress and keeps us from thinking clearly.

I should close by pointing out that I'm not a psychologist or a shrink, I'm just a guy who's "been there," so to speak. If you find yourself being continually and overly anxious or depressed, don't be ashamed or scared of seeking some counseling with somebody about it, there are a lot of people out there who can help. But try and look at some of the things I've already mentioned first.

just talk to others and show your good side. you have your goals set right? well then set little goals alongthe way and take time to enjoy your life. im feeling the same way but tis other people like yourself who i connect to. i see a bright beautiful person and has alot going on its just that you have a hard time letting yourself come out and show who you really are. ill hel you get motivated

I know what you mean. In college, you hear stories of parties and what not and you think its going to change your life and you'll have a great time. For some it is, for others it isn't.
Currently majoring in become a pharmacist. It's so hard, the competition is killer. I'm smart, but even then everyone surpasses me. Even if I do make it out alive, I won't go anywhere without the social skills. I've been a very shy guy since jr high. I thought I broke out of it in college but I guess that I'm still lonely and I get depressed a lot. Very few friends... and I don't hang out with them.
it help you to know that you arent only one

It may help you to know you are not the only one. It sucks..
