How can depressed people sleep so much?!

Question: I mean, I understand the "why" part of it...to escape problems, but my questions is Physically...HOW can a person sleep all hours of the day only to wake up, use the bathroom, get a bite to eat, and return to the bed? How long can this go on before it will take a toll on the physical body? Like the muscles not working and whatever else happens from someone being so inactive.

I know what you mean about the physical body thing, i always kinda wondered that about myself because I have been like that, I sleep a LOT. I guess that because you sleep all the time, you aren't using a lot of energy so you don't really get that hungry. I think that most people are up long enough to keep their muscles from deteriorating though.

no offense meant or anything, but i do not think that you do understand the why. it is not purely because we want to "escape our problems" as you put it. it is also due to the extremely intense emotional and mental turmoil that goes through our heads. this turmoil is so draining, that to merely function we require more than average sleep. unless you have been through it you may imagine to understand, but the truth is that all those who do not go through it will never come close to understanding the difficulties associated with just getting up some days.

It works the opposite of insomnia <depresion is mostly a chemical defect in the brain That chemical tends to,in some poeple let them sleep a lot ,But try to get the person on anti depresans,as you are right it does take its toll physicaly and depending on a persons phytuge

This is an interesting question, because I wonder about it myself! When I was depressed I would take a 3-4 hour nap, go to bed early, sleep in til noon or one, then take a 3 or 4 horu nap again around 4 or 5 pm....every day.

Eventually it was determined that the depression was a side effect of my having an undiagnosed condition (inattentive typr ADD and a nonverbal learning disorder) that caused one half of my brain to work very fast and the other to work slower than normal. My doctor says that's why I was able to sleep so much - I really WAS tired, or at least my brain was.

Perhaps others have similar problems that cause their excessive sleepiness?

thats the one thing boutthe illness is that it makes people wantto sleep alotto avoid be awake and dealing with waht they are going through. dont worry you didnt disrespect anyone

Not enough serotonin to the brain can make you sluggish and tired.

No offense taken. Depression is not only a problem of mood. The chemicals in the brain go screwy, and it affects every part of the body. When a person is depressed, their metabolism changes. While I don't know the details, I know that the chemicals completely change the way the body works.

Hope that helps.

Basically your body is stressed out and needs to regenerate and then becomes accustomed to get alot of sleep not only out of habbit but because you realy cant feel you can handel whats going on.when your mind doesnt get what is called the delta wave lengh sleep tone that is vital to REM it doesnt matter how long you sleep your not realy getting any rest out of it. Thats pretty much why in my opinion.
