Working in a psych ward?!

Question: I have been hospitalized twice before and the thing that stands out the most were the people that worked there. they really helped me and related to my issues. I would like to become a mental health technician and continuously be with the adolescents, but I am looking for a long term position that I can still have when I am older. Another problem is that being a mental health technician pays very little and I will need more money to support myself and a family. Does anyone know a job in a psych ward like this other than a Psychiatrist (I don't really like them)?

You could become a Mental Health Clinician (therapist/social worker) and work with youth but it would be in a group home environment. You would still be working with youth and their behaviors (parasuicidal behaviors, suicidal, aggression, etc.) such as a psych ward, only it would not be in a psych hospital as you mentioned. Hours are great, but long at times, long term position-yes, older-yes, pay - very good, you would need to get your Masters for schooling, but I am sure you would find it extremely rewarding without becoming a Psychiatrist.

Be a Nurse. You can specialize by working in Psych ward and also the pay is decent.

Yeah the thing that sticks out the most at all the wards I've been to is the people that work there. I am almost in the same posistion. And I've choosen a nurse for the psych ward...I dont want to be a psychiatrist either. But I remember the nurses and I talked to them all the time...I hope it works out.
