Depression and overeating or undereating?!

Question: Why is it when one person is depressed their appetite increases and the other (like me) doesn't feel like eating?
And if you can answer this aswell; why is it when I'm depressed I can slap my face pretty hard and not feel ANYTHING?

Well, generally when people are depressed, they resort to two ways of confronting thier depression. One is to lose your appetite because nothing else will fill the void and food doesn't occupy an important part of your daily life anymore as the issue causing the depression pre-occupies your mind and you don't try to hide it or cover it up, so, because of your pre-occupation with it, you lose your appetite because nothing else matters. I believe I answered the second question first, so pardon me.
On the other hand, some people by the same token, when they are depressed don't want to confront the situation and they bottle it up inside of them. The only outlet for them to relieve themselves of thier depression is to turn to eating as a comfort measure. Unfortunately, since they are depressed, it is almost impossible for them to stop themselves from over eating hence the notable increase in appetite. The way each person's appetite reacts to depression is ultimately controlled by the hypothalamus which is a small pea-like structure at the base of the brain which is part of the limbic system.
Now, slapping yourself...what you feel or don't feel when you slap yourself is all dependent upon the actions of neurons and neurotrasmitters which are chemicals produced by these neurons in the brain. Of all the neurotrasmitters , dopamine, noepinephrine and serotonin have been found to affect reaction to physical drive of sleep, sexuality and emotions, so, this is fully tied in to your decreased tactile response when you slap yourself, because less of these neurotransmitters, especially noepinephrin, are produced by the brain hence the use of anti-depressants to increase their levels .
After all said and done, depression is not a condition that should be swept under the carpet and it is wonderful to know that more and more people are talking about it and there are treatments out there for it. Most importantly, you need family and friends as support because no one can go it alone. I wish you the best and good health ultimately.
