Yes and no. I think that both ADD and ADHD are grossly over-diagnosed, but that doesn't mean that they don't really exist.
I was diagnosed with ADD when I was in elementary school and was later re-diagnosed with bipolar disorder. So the medical condition is there.. it's just that the methods of diagnosing ADD/ADHD are either too broad or not accurate.
Many people don't understand or don't know the proper way to diagnose ADHD or other types of disorders, especially the general family doctor. So they tend to medicate if the patient or parents of the patient want a pill-cure. Plus, the patient can qualify for services, such as education support, etc.
This tends to misdiagnose more frequently for quick and easy cures.
There is a medical condition by that diagnosis and you can view SPECT images of the drop in circulation in the prefrontal lobes by going to BrainPlace.com and look at Dr. Amen's work. Yes it is a label put on many kids by Docs who don't know how to diagnose the disorder. You need to see someone who has the creds to diagnose.
Are you talking about the hyperactive-impulsive type or the inattentive type. When I was unmediated I was hypo-active rather than hyperactive.
I suffer from AD/HD inattentive type and at elementary school I was very cagey and reserved. It was only diagnosed when I was 15 but and was misdiagnosed with Asperger Syndrome when I was 6. I've been through a hell of a lot **** to get to where I am now, my AD/HD was destroying my life. So don't you idly bring out the whole global pharmaceutical control theory. I fought for my own diagnosis and I encourage many others to do the same.
