How long does it take to see a psychiatrist for adhd treatment?!

Question: I was diagnosed as a young boy i took Ritalin for about 5 years and stoped during middle school,i am know 21 and over the years after being more educated about adhd i realized my symptoms are real bad and affected my grades during high school,i've tryed to suck it up for years, but after being strong and trying to deal with the symptoms i think my adhd is too severe and i want to try medication again..i just recently got insurance, and start a new job in a week in a half..as a customer service representative, bascially sitting at a desk with a phone and computer allday i really want to start treatment before work starts,i called psychiatrist friday and left alot of messages..how long does it usually take to see a psychiatrist?..and can anyone help me or have any advise to seeing a psychiatrist/specialist as soon as possible.

thanks everyone!

uhhh...whoever said 6 months because of iq testing and something about the brain must be on crack. i was diagnosed as adhd when i was really young...then in 7th-9th i stopped taking it because i was an idiot and refused to take it...but during that time i did reeally bad...but last year i got back on Adderall (i'm a junior now) and it's worked perfectly. and it only took me a week to get into see the psych

just call a psychiatrist, make an appointment and you will be in to see them in a week or two, depending on if they are really busy or not. they do not do brain and iq testing, ADHD are said to be more intelligent than people without it (guess thats why i get straight a's now woo haha) the psych asks you why you think you need to be on medication again...tell them ALL of your problems, since you are already diagnosed...then just tell them over the years it has gotten worse and tell them you went off of it for awhile. then they will prescribe your medicine, maybe refer you to a therapist. since idiots like to abuse the meds that help us ADHD sufferers, there was a law passed that said we have to have a prescription paper everytime we run out because they may think we are selling it blah blah blah...but the law said something about if you are on adderall and ritalin, etc, you will need to go in to the psych every 2 months to get new refill paper thingys. if you remember that ritalin worked very well for you, talk about that...or adderall...other medicines i heard don't exactly work like adderall and ritalin do. just call up a psychiatrist office and get an appointment ASAP. it won't take long for you to get in. good luck! just hang in there bud!

oh p.s.
when you were in grade school, did you ever have a test for the 5-0-4 plan? i did...because adhd is known as a physical and mental disability and if you get that then you are protected by a certain law...for whatever reason you need to be. so maybe that is the test the person was talking about..who knows. just don't worry, you wil get in soon

If you have a general practitioner, he/she will probably be able to get you an appointment faster by giving you a referral and setting up the appointment for you.

At least 6 months and often thorough testing of the brain and IQ levels plus a hella ofalot of money!!!! Especially if you are over 18yrs old
