I know someone who has had a few drug induced psychotic breaks. The Symptoms so closely resemble schizophrenia that the only way you can tell the difference is that schizophrenia will not just go away. That is why doctors are not supposed to diagnose schizophrenia unless the symptoms have went on for I think a year. The person I knew was doing pot, mushrooms meth and whatever else the first time she went crazy. It lasted about 3 months. The second time she was doing meth again I think. She has been okay for about 3 years now. If your friend has beemn using drugs he should stop or it could become permanent. My husband is a psych nurse and he says many of his patient have permanantly damaged their brains using drugs. Hope he is better.

Honestly have your friend go back to the Dr and get a check up and explain what you just said or have them do it. Not taking meds for something is just as horrible as taking them if your friend is on the wrong meds.
Good Luck

the mind works in weird ways.

the idea of a mental problem such as schizophrenia being 'incurable' is not really true. though modern medicine has no proven cure for schizophrenia as of yet, it is possible that your friends schizophrenia was repressed by another section of the brain. its also possible that though your friend was diagnosed with schizophrenia, he actually had something else.

the idea of someone else giving him something to make him schizophrenic is possible. but very unlikely, and even less likely that this was been done on purpose. it is possible for mental diseases to be caused by narcotics, especially amphetamines and hallucinogens.

Schizophrenics usually cycle through their symptoms. Some days are better, some are worse. It is not impossible for your schizophrenic friend to have a period of time where he is less symptomatic and may appear relatively normal, even off of his medications.

Having said that, it is possible to develop psychotic symptoms from taking certain substances, but that seems like an unlikely scenario to me. A well-trained psychiatrist will rule out that sort of psychosis through a thorough history-taking and psychiatric evaluation.

In short, your friend shouldn't make any changes to his medication routine without consulting his psychiatrist first. His psychiatrist will know what kinds of symptoms to check for. If your friend is concerned that his psychiatrist is not evaluating him thoroughly enough, I suggest that he talk to a local advocacy agency for the mentally ill.
