Why shouldn't mental retardation be assessed solely on IQ?!
Question: Because some forms of intelligence can't be accurately measured by the IQ test -- such as musical or kinesthetic intelligence.
I once went to school a 'mentally retarded' kid who was positively amazing when it came to playing the drums.
It's simply an unfair assumption to say that (solely) people who score low on IQ tests are mentally retarded... they could very well be utilizing another form of intelligence that went unnoticed.

Good question...
It is debatable with some people out there whether or not they should be considered mentally retarded, even with a "high" IQ.
