What do you do when you don't enjoy doing anything?!

Question: I have depression and I take medication, but I don't think its really about that. I'm not looking for sympathy either. I just wanted to make this clear.

I have a problem. I don't get any joy out of anything. A lot of people have something that keeps them moving, but I think part of my problem is I don't have that. I've tried doing many things, but I've never really gotten great pleasure out of anything. This is sad, but I don't even really enjoy sex! The only thing I have enjoyed is doing drugs (Oxycontin), and that's NOT what I want to do with the rest of my life, at least I don't think so. It doesn't seem like anything compares to that feeling, but maybe that's asking too much from life...

Does anyone have any ideas, or any ways I can maybe change my perspective. I have an open mind, so I'd REALLY appreciate some feedback.

Also for the record I am fairly religious and do believe in God.

I can really relate to your post. I meet many people who take the easiest road in life and they basically sit in front of the television all day, care for their pets and eat meals. I think their lifestyle is better than being on drugs or doing something else that is destructive.

Not all of the causes of depression have been identified and practitioners can not yet identify the causes of each client's depression. Therefore, the treatments for depression can be inadequate for some patients, which results in having no motivation to do anything.

I would say that your best bet is to read depression books and see if any of them have any ideas that would help you. There are also happiness web sites, some with well-researched ideas that work. You want to take note of anything that sparks a mild interest in life. It may be a new food or a joke or running into an old friend. Keep a running list so you can find things in life that give you a spark.

If you are in a rut then do some volunteer work... help others and get ideas from live people on what is important...

Do you work? because i suffer from depression also and i find that as much as i hate work its a good outlet after all. I get to have a laugh with the girls ect. and it keeps my mind off of things.

I would be interested to know your age but you should read up on human hormone levels, especially HGH (human growth hormone), and Testosterone and see if u think u have symptoms of deficiencies. After you read about that maybe check with an endocrinologist and get tests. If u go to a regular dr. they might not find anything but check with a specialist. A lot of times mental instabilities are directly related to hormone or vitamin deficiencies.

Have you considered a change in your medication? Maybe a different dose or different med would help. I also suffer from depression and anxiety, but am much better with medication. I have found that performing some sort of functional task helps to give me sense of order and satisfaction. Fixing some small thing around the house, washing a window, cleaning the closet or refrigerator. I'm not a neat freak.... far from it, but these types of things help my psyche when I need it.
