Strange Fears?!

Question: For the past few months I have been having a really strange fear. When I lay down in bed to go to sleep, I always think I hear someone breaking in and I honestly think I am going to die! It has got so bad that I make my boyfriend stay up and watch tv in our room until I fall asleep because I know he will catch someone if the break in and also the tv drowns out all the little noises. I always try to convince myself that its just the wind making noise or whatever but I still panic! Another fear of mine is driving. I dont drive at the moment cause my license is suspended but my boyfriend does. I do alot better on the normal roads but highways I cant stand. I spend most of the time covering my eyes & yelling at my boyfriend to "watch out!" even tho he is a great driver and pays attention to the road. I got into a wreck a few years ago with a semi, I wasnt hurt but it was a pretty bad wreck & it was on the highway. I know this probably has something to do with it? Im tired of this! Help!!!!

phobias are more common then you might think, but for it to be considered a mental illness under the DSM (diagnostic statistic manual) your phobia has to interfere significantly with your life style.

It sounds to me like it is messing with your life pretty significantly with it limiting your travelling and harming your ability to sleep.

There are proven techniques to help phobia suffers understand their fears and then overcome them. So if your interested in getting help I would recommend a human service profession with sort of training...psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical social worker

~this shall be a sign unto you~

I think you are either having a panic attacks or an anxiety attacks..Either one ...there is help.Go to your DR. and tell them your fears. There is a name and medicine that u can take.Look up anxiety or panic attacks on the web. There is alot of good info. but go to the DR. and get help!Good luck!

phobias are common and sometimes when we are already stressing about other things, the phobias are more pronounced..i suggest you seek counseling, esp for the fear of dying and someone breaking in

its called post traumatic stress syndrome
