If your friend is truly an Narcissist, there is not point in telling him. It is only important that YOU know what he is. He will stab you in the back and twist the blade if he believes that it is to his benefit and you need to know that.If you told him, he would simply reject your comments and likely reject you. If you want to maintain a relationship with this person (I don't know why you would) the only thing that you can say to him is whatever feeds his ego.

What would be the point? There is no real treatment for NPD.

Tell him he would make a good celebrity.

Most of us don't like criticism.. that doesn't make a person a narcissist. He could simply be lacking in self esteem and on the defensive. It won't help for you to diagnose him (especially since you are not a doctor). How do you know that you are not overly critical? Worry about yourself and let him worry about himself and everything will turn out better.

Send him a letter explaining it where the letters are cut out from a newspaper.

Crazy problems require crazy solutions.

If this person really has NPD, its going to be very hard to tell them. A huge part of most personality disorders is believing that they don't have flaws, and especially not ones as big as a personality disorder. If you really think this person needs help, suggest them seeing a professional over something smaller and easier to accept (ie recent stress, inability to sleep) and hope that the good doc picks up and the problem. Also, there's a huge difference between someone being a narcissist and having NPD.
