What to do about suicidal friend's sister??!

Question: So my best friend's sister is suicidal. She just found out that she has cervical cancer and since getting the news she's been really 'loopy'. She attempted to kill herself on New years Even by locking herself in the car (with it running) in the garage and again last night (but it was more geared to self mutilation).
Apparently she is refusing help and will not allow anyone to take her to the hospital. But they did get her to the hospital on New Year's Eve only to be discharged and sent home...
I realize you can't control what other people do but how do you help someone like this? BTW I don't know her very well, only met her maybe twice...

If she is a danger to herself and/or others then she can be detained (sectioned) under the mental health act - this means that the doctors of the hospital have FULL control of the patient and can prevent them from going home. There are 3 types of sections - a section 52, a section 2 and a section 3. A section 52 is for emergencies and keeps someone in hospital against their will for up to 3 days. A section 2 holds the patient for a maximum of 28 days and is used to assess patients. A section 3 lasts for up to 6 months and is used to treat patients against their will.

I hate to say it, but if she continues trying to commit suicide, she will most likely need to be institutionalized. Her family should get her to talk to a psychiatrist, as she has obviously just heard some crushing news.
