Is it safe to take out of date medication that is in pill form...?

This is Lipitor a year and two months past the expiration date . Please nothing general. I need specific info. on this specific mediation. Or any alternate medications..OTC for lowering cholesterol (that actually work)... Please note your references!! Thank you!
