No, stool softeners (as long as they are not mixed with another drug) do not create dependence requiring you to use more of them. In fact, they are so safe that Ob/gyn's have regularly prescribe them to expectant mothers. It's also a little known fact that dulcolax and colace ARE natural.
Laxatives on the other hand can be habit forming, especially the stimulant laxatives. Fiber is a safe bet for most people. Finding the right form of fiber can be a trick.

Yup. You become dependant on them and can't go without them. Same for laxatives.
