What is an alternative medicine that is as strong as morphine? Is there one?!

I have a chronic back ache that is very severe and excruciating all the time. My Doctor doesn't believe I hurt so much and will not prescribe anything that will alleviate the pain. I'm changing Doctors on the advice of my family who have seen me cry with my back. I was wondering if there is something that is holistic or alternative for a pain killer as strong as morphine. Also, I would love to have my back operated on but it's my lumbar and people are afraid I will be paralyzed. I just don't want to go through my life with this pain. I want to help my community and mankind which is my focus but do it comfortably. Thank you for responses in advance. =]
