Yes it does. Psyllium is one of the safer more natural laxatives. It is considered a bulking laxative, as it attracts more water into the stool, preventing it from drying out and become more solid, which makes it harder to pass.

Do drink plenty of water if taking psyllium, as this makes it more effective. Start off on a small dose, and slowly increase it over the next few days until the desired effect is reached.

And, and by the same virtues of absorbing water that make it useful for constipation, it can draw water from a lose stool to help with diarrhea.
