I'm a recovered alcoholic and now work in a rehab unit for alcoholics and drug addicts!.
Methadone is similar in action to heroin and is given to help wean people off the drug, it has to be carefully controlled as it's possible to become addicted to the 'medicine'!.
It's only available on prescription and is a class 'A' drug itself!.
One of the problems associated with it is that some heroin addicts who are not interested in recovery take it as well as their heroin as it's free!.

Not used for alcohle addiction, for that they use something called Naltrexone, which is in tablet form, or actually surgically inplanted into a patient!.

Justin L is right!. It is used for Heroin patients usually!. I think it smells like cough syrup slightly!. No it is not used for alcohol addiction!. Www@Answer-Health@Com
