Answers: Cod liver oil is high in vitamin A. Why do some people think children need cod liver oil supplements, especially in the winter months?

Fortified cod liver oil usually contains 4,000 IU of vitamin A and 400 IU of vitamin D.

In winter when there is not much Sun you could become deficient in vitamin D and that could cause bone problems and for growing kids that could be very serious as kids as well as adults need vitamin D for the absorption of calcium.

My youngest was always a very chesty baby especially when she had a cold. I started giving my kids a capsule every morning all year round and it worked wonders. No rumbling noises in her chest even with a cold and since asthma runs in the family every little helps.

It is thought to increase brain power.

Cod liver oil is widely taken to ease the pain and joint stiffness associated with arthritis,[1] but has also been clinically proven to have a positive effect on heart,[2][3] bone,[4] and brain,[5] as well as helping to nourish skin,[6] hair, and nails.

Cod liver oil and fish oil are similar, but cod liver oil has much higher levels of vitamins A and D. Many adults don't meet the RDA for Vitamin D.[7][8][9][10]

In 2005, a study by researchers at the University of California found that Vitamin D may lower the risk of developing different types of cancers, halving the chances of getting breast, ovarian, and colon cancers.[11]

Use of cod liver oil during pregnancy is associated with lower risk of Type I diabetes in the offspring.[12] This effect was found only in mothers taking cod liver oil, not in mothers taking multivitamin supplements. Cod liver oil taken by nursing mothers improves the breast milk by increasing the amount of fatty acids, which promotes brain development, and the amount of vitamin A, which helps prevent infections, but the level of vitamin D is unchanged.

Part of it depends on which Cod Liver Oil... some are processed so they only have vitamins A (which is good for skin, eyes, and immune system health) and D (which helps the absorption of Calcium), some also add some EPA and DHA (which help with brain, skin, joint, and cardiovascular health) back in. Ultimately, children should only be given Cod Liver Oil if their diets are deficient in vitamins A and D because they are fat soluble vitamins that can build up in the system to toxic levels. If they have enough A and D in their diet, they can benefit from eating more fish or fish oil, but CLO would be too much.

As far as your comment of "especially in the winter months", I wonder if you're referring to the vitamin D. Humans produce vitamin D when their skin is exposed to the natural sunlight, and people (especially children) are typically bundled up and covered during the winter, which means they get less vitamin D production.

It is said to give the system of a boosted immune system to ward off flus and colds. It also helps with joints and arthritic pain.
