If you have a family member with diabetes, then your chances of getting diabetes are higher than those that don't. That doesn't mean you will absolutely get it, that depends on other factors as well such as lifestyle, ( eating healthy and exercising).

No, you do not get it when you are born. I did not get type 2 diabetes until I was 60 years old. I have a family history of diabetes. I feel that I did not exercise enough and basically ate anything I wanted to.

Here are some thing that a person can do to help prevent or delay the onset of diabetes:

1. Watch your waistline. One of the best indicators of diabetes is " belly fat." Belly fat is probably the root cause of insulin resistance and metabolic problems including diabetes, cholesterol problems and high blood pressure.

2. Eating a healthy diet that focuses on healthy grains and good fats. This also means portion control.

3.Exercise at least 45 minutes a day 5 days a week.

I hope this helps answer you question.

Unfortunately, at this point in time, nobody has any idea of what causes it for sure. There are a lot of theories and old-wives-tales (eating too much sugar causes it and whatnot), but nothing has been conclusive after the decades of research that's been done.

Some people theorize that it's genetic (meaning when you're born, it's already determined you'll have it), some people theorize it's because of some cellular/genetic damage that occurs during a person's life (which is hard to prove), and some theorize that it's entirely based on obesity (although it happens in a few thin people).

Many theories make sense, but nothing has been conclusive enough to say it's right. Once it's finally figured out what causes it, the researchers can start working on prevention.

There are great books out there about what to do, I personally believe it's something we Americans put in our bodies all the time. Everything from pop, to food additives. I have listed some great resources, do the study for yourself, you will be glad you did.
