I have found fenegreek and thyme very helpful. You can get it in a combo at any GNC. Drinking lots of water helps to make the mucous in your nose flow out easier too. Also a bowl filled with hot steamy water and a towel place over your head and steam rising on your face is good. eucolyptus oil, or peppermint (sorry about the spelling) in the water, just a little, opens up the sinuses. Vitamin C helps too with drinking lots of water. These are things I have personally used on myself and my family. I hope it helps.
ephedra is not a decongestant. It ventilates the lungs to stop wheezing and frees the waterways, ie makes you pee. It also releases the exterior, making you sweat so that you can push out a cold exterior pathogen.
I use and recommend yerba santa, elder flower, peppermint. Goldenseal is indicated if there is a sinus infection, but shouldn't be used for prolonged periods of time, because it can be too drying.
I have found that a neti pot is very effective when you have congestion. Sleeping with a humidifier at night helps a lot too.
