Try on the DD bra!. The rulers don't lie!.
But did you measure around you and then measure around the cup!?
If you are a 36 around underneith the breast then a 40 around the breast it would be right!.
EDIT: Wait!.!.!. I misunderstood, you used a normal ruler!. You can't do that!. You have to use a tape measure, and it has to be the real flexible kind that they use for measuring material!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

This is how I was taught!.
If you don't have a tape measure, use string or yarn, then measure against the ruler!.
Measure under your breasts, all around your rib cage!. Add 4 inches if the number is even, add 5 inches if the number is odd!. That is your base bra measure (ie I am 29 inches around my ribs!. That means I'm a 34!.)
Now, measure around the fullest part of the breast while wearing an unpadded bra!. Subtract the number from around your breast from the number around your ribs (with the add 4/5) ie mine is 39 - 34 = 5 so I'm a DD!. 2=B, 3=C, 4=D!.
Some bras are a little different for the cup size, so if you're in the plus sizes, you probably want to go try one on to make sure which size you are!.
Hope that helps!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Honestly, they mostly make it up!. I've read all the online sites about breast measurements and actually had the full 45-minute bra sizing at Nordstrom!. I range from a 36 B/C to a 38 DD!. What I've figured out is that bra sizings are only a starting point, and you need to try on *every* bra you buy before you commit to owning it!.
Make sure when you have it on that it's not digging into you, and that it's not riding up in the back!.
The cups should fit smoothly to your breasts!.
The support should be mostly from the cups: if you loosen the straps, are your breasts still supported!? When the straps are snug are they cutting into your shoulders!.
That's the only reason you'd really have to know!. If you're in a "I am a Playboy bunny and need to give my centerfold measurements" type situation, honestly, just say what you think is best!. 36-24-36 is the classic babe profile!. Much like male penis size, it's not likely that you'll ever be called out with a ruler to give proof!.Www@Answer-Health@Com

Any big department store, its no big deal go to the underware department!.
Or get a friend to get a tape, holding it just under the back of your shoulders, and bring it round the front up to the centre section of your breasts, this will give you your cm!. not the a b c ratings!. (with a sewing measuring tape! not a ruler!.)Www@Answer-Health@Com
