I want to know what to expect about Paps?!

Question: It is time for me to get my first pap smear. i am 18 and have a boyfriend. We are planning on being sexually active soon and are trying to be as safe as possible. Me with birth control and him with a condom. I would just like to know what to expect when getting a pap smear. How uncomfortable it is. if it hurts any. What exactly they do. What sort of questions will be asked.

If it's your first visit, you'll probably sit down with the doctor and talk about your medical and sexual history. You should ask any questions and raise any concerns you have. I would suggest writing down all the questions you have so you don't forget once you're there. After talking to the doctor, they'll have you give a urine sample. They'll put you in the exam room where you undress and get on the exam table. The doctor will have you put your feet into the stirrups so she can examine your vagina. They'll insert a speculum and use a swab to collect some cervical cells. The speculum is a bit uncomfortable, and the swab can feel like a bit of a pinch, but neither is painful. The doctor will then use two fingers to feel inside to check your ovaries and uterus. Then the doctor will examine your breasts to check for lumps. The entire exam only takes about 5 minutes. It's uncomfortable, but not painful. Feel free to ask what's happening if the doctor doesn't explain what she's doing. Make sure you're totally honest with the doctor about everything. If you're going on birth control, make sure you're completely comfortable with the procedure for starting to take it, and when it will be effective. Don't be afraid to ask lots of questions!

It doesnt hurt, and the discomfort lasts for about 3 seconds , its only about a 3-4 minute exam, and good for you for starting out so young with this exam its very important

i just had one cuz i just lost my virginity to my bf and needed birth control... so much better without a condom by the way
anyways...
checks your breasts
tells you not to smoke
opens your legs
sticks the clamp in there and swabs to check for std and whatnot... i dunno, i wasnt a virgin and i used tampons so it wasnt too bad
just cold
then she stuck two fingers in me too check my uterus and whatever else... it really didnt take very long... 15 minutes tops
a lil awkward... but really not that bad
she made me feel comfortable which made it easier

I just got my first one a few days ago, I'm 17.
They just asked how many guys I've slept with. If I'm sexually active. They told me what to expect. It's uncomfortable but if you have ever been to the hospital for being raped it's similar to that but much less painful I handled that pap much better. Yes it does hurt a little but then again I was very nervous and tense. They just stick this thing up you it's like 2 fingers wide but they put something to make it not hurt as much my doctor put some kind of numbing medicine. I also got cramps and bled a little but I was told it's normal.

It doesn't hurt unless you're a virgin as the doc will have to break your hymen to get to your cervix. Doc should leave the room while you take off your pants and lie down on the bed with a sheet over your legs and waist. Then you'll put your legs in stirrups or just bend your knees and part your legs. Doc will then take a speculum and insert it into your vagina and then will open your vagina with it. It's made of metal so will be cold, unless you have a caring doc who will warm it up for you ;) Then with your vagina opened he'll swab your cervix. You'll feel it but it wont hurt. This swab is sent to the lab for testing. You can then get dressed. It takes less than 5 minutes. You'll be fine.

Well, you will be left alone in a room to undress yourself and put on one of those paper hospital gowns. The room is always freezing, of course. When the doctor returns, he will ask you to put your feet up on two foot holders that hold your legs up and apart, and drape a blanket over your lower torso. He will do all of his examining with a gloved hand [[lubricated so it isn't painful]]. The worst part is when they take a sample of the tissue on your cervex... it kinda feels like a scrape, and I felt kinda funny a couple hours afterword. It doesn't hurt really bad or anything... just feels kinda uncomfortable.

Your doctor should be explaining what he is doing and asking you if you have any questions the entire time.

Good luck! [[It's not that bad]].

It will be more uncomfortable than anything else. They will slide in an instrument that is almost about the size of a penis and then they will click it a few times just to open you up more and then they will swab you with a few q-tips for testing ext. it hurts just a little but it is over in 2-3 minutes. good luck and thats so awesome the two of you are being so safe!

The doctor will look inside you after inserting an instrument called a speculum, it helps open you up for a better look. The pap smear is to check for abnormal cells on your cervix. This involves taking a sample of the cells with a swab or stick. The doctor will then remove the speculum and insert her fingers and press on your belly so she can feel your ovaries and uterus. She/he will also examine your breasts. It can be uncomfortable because the speculum can be cold and it opens your vagina wider. You will be asked when the last time you had sex and when your last period was, if there are any allergies, or any problems.

Hi there! Going to the gyno isn't that bad, it's more uncomfy than painful. First they will have you pee in a cup to check for things like protein or sugar. Then they'll do your weight, height, blood pressure, all that fun stuff. Then you'll go in with the doctor (first though, before they come in, you'll have to take off your clothes, and they'll give you a robe and a blanket to place over you lap), and she/he will ask if you're on any meds and your sexual history. They may ask if you want to be put on birth control/how your birth control is making you feel (some people have really bad side effects). After that they'll have you lay back and they'll probably do a breast exam (where they just feel for cysts/bumps), then place your feet in the stirrups and perform the pelvic exam. They'll place an instrument in you (it looks like a duck's bill) that opens up, then they'll scrape some cells for an analysis (it doesnt hurt, but it causes me to cramp later). After that they'll take the instrument out and insert 2 fingers and feel around (looking for abnormalities). After that some doctors do a rectal exam. That's it! They'll have you get dressed and make an appointment for next year!

It doesn't hurt unless you tense up, I always have to take a xanex before I see the gynocologist because a few years ago a male ob/gyn fondled and molested me, he didn't have a nurse present in the room, and I actually had to scream out "SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME" before someone actually knocked on the door to find me totally hysterical and the pervert Doctor acting like nothing was wrong. The next day I had a high fever, was bleeding profusely and had a very bad infection.
Make sure the person you see ISN'T a man, and has a female nurse in the room also, just in case.
I brought this jerk up on charges in front of the Florida Medical board....and the SOB never showed.

A pap won't hurt, but it will be mortifying and one of the most embaressing exams you'll ever have....so definately either take a tranquilizer or a good stiff drink before you go....you'll thank me for the advice....especially if it's your first time.
