They are very nice and gentle as they know it is an intimidating experience, so it doesn't hurt and they will try to help you relax.
A good tip is to remember that you're doing a good thing by going, and when they are examining you, relax completely.
Bring a friend with you so they can calm you down too

sorry, i'm scared to go too!!

Does not hurt. Dont worry. I started going at 14. Its something you NEED to do. ANd trust me, it worse when pregnant.

The first thing you should do is try to relax. You are not going to get "violated". If you are having an internal pelvic exam you will feel some pressure but it really doesn't hurt. The more relaxed you are physically and emotionally the easier it will be. Try to do some deep breathing and if you are at all uncomfortable ask questions. If you have a male doctor there will be a female in the room with you during the exam. If you are going because you are having a problem make sure that you tell the truth whatever the questions are and know that the doctor is there to try to help you. Good luck to you.

It's pretty much like any other doctors visit. Just a little more uncomfortable. There is no point in being embarrassed. They look at vaginas all day long, so yours is nothing special. I've been going since I was 15 (I had a severe pelvic infection and they discovered cancer)... so that is 12 years that I have been going to the gyno. I've had surgery down there three times now. So I've probably have about, oh, 25 visits or so. I've had male doctors and female doctors. I feel MUCH more comfortable with a female doctor. I mean, she's got the same equipment I've got, right?

It doesn't hurt. It is uncomfortable, but they will stop if it hurts. I promise it's not that bad. Do what I do. Bring a book.

Relax! It's really not a big deal. Before you go, just think about any questions the doctor may ask you and anticipate the answers. They will ask you if you've been having any problems or discomfort, irregular menstruation, whether or not you're sexually active, etc. The worst part of the examination (and it's really not that bad) is the Pap smear. It's a little bit awkward at first, because they have to put a swab all the way into your vagina to srape the surface of the cervix to test for cervical cancer. It's only a little bit weird at first because obviously, you're completely exposed. But don't worry at all about shaving/not shaving down there etc. I talked to a gynecologist while job shadowing, and she said sometimes people will be embarassed or even apologize for "not shaving" or something, and she said that honestly, she's seen everything and doesn't judge you based on that.

Also, obviously, you'll probably be much more comfortable with a female gynecologist =)

Good luck, and its really not that bad!

Okay, I'm a guy, but I have my two cents, too! lol

I've obviously never gone to see the OB/GYN, but, I HAVE gone and had a doctor stick a finger up my butt, I've had nurses and doctors stare at my testicals and flaccid penis (not the most impressive sight, I'll admit), grope them, push them around, squeeze them, I've had a medical technician stick a rubber tube up my butt in order to fill my intestines with a radioactive dye (to test for appendicitis)...by the way, THAT was the single most uncomfortable feeling I may have ever had in my life. I felt like I had uncontrollable diarrhea, but still was forced to wait for some 5-10 minutes! When I finally was set free, I ran to the toilet and took literally 3 or 4 s**ts!!! Holy Shnikey! Oh, and last, but not least, I've had to lay my balls on a towel and have them lubed up in order for this cute chick to rub them down with an ultrasound device (and, not to mention, it had been MONTHS since I had gotten laid before that incident...actually, years). So I have a few awkward stories to tell of as well. And yet, I've never once felt awkward about it.

I know it's different for girls because there are SO many societal pressures and things that make you feel weird about your private parts, even moreso than for guys. But all I can say is, hey, doctors are professionals and have seen EVERYTHING. They've probably seen guys hung down to their knees and also micro-penises, they've seen girls with oversized clitorises, and guys with their urethral opening on the UNDERSIDE of the penis head...they've seen all shapes, sizes, smells, colors, you name it!

So when I go, I think, "Hm, I wonder if I'll break any records of theirs? Nah...although I take pride in being different, I doubt I'll show them anything new at all this time."

I dunno, make a quacking sound when they bring the duck thing out...maybe it'll make you feel more comfortable. ;-)

Call the office and tell them it is your first time. Explain that you have serious anxiety about your visit. You can ask for a mild tranquilizer or extra time during the appointment. My doctor provided me with both. The exam is uncomfortable, but you need to stop thinking of being violated. It will not be truly painful unless you get yourself all worked up and anxious.
