Is stress the problem?!

Question: Okay so for the past few weeks, we have been testing non stop in school and I have projects and papers to keep me busy for years *my professors don't get enough*

But my problem is, it's been close to 5 weeks since I've had my period and it generally comes before now. I'm slightly worried and stressing out a lot. I have been emotionally drained as well lately and I thinks it's causing my stomach cramps. My cramps are like sharp pains almost like gas and they last for close to 10 min. I have had stomach cramps but they've never lasted as long as these have. These have been going on for close to 4 weeks. I don't have period like symptoms. I'm not pregnant. I haven't been sexually active in close to 2 months but I am stressing out. I plan to see a doctor next monday, but my question is, could the stress be throwing off my period?

Absolutely! And, when you said piles of exams, papers and projects for school, I shook my head. One of the worst times I ever had was similar to what you described. I felt like the school stuff would just NEVER end, just overwhelming to keep on top of everything. I was headed for one of my last tests for the school year and I remember thinking, "where is my period?" because I knew it should have come on about a week earlier. I was bloated, irritable and, yes, my stomach was really doing somersaults.

I remember feeling like I had cramps after I took my exam, went to the bathroom, and yes, I was flowing away:) I felt so relieved and so much better.

I told my mom and she said that it's very common. Later, my gynecologist told me that generally it's the mind-body connection to whatever can throw off your cycle. He told me in the future to just be aware of it. I think just being aware of it was enough to hit that mind-body connection.

I've had a lot more stressful events since that exam period, but my period usually comes on like clockwork.

With you, I would just say the same thing: be aware of the situation in the future. Otherwise, try to get through what you have to and if your period still hasn't appeared, give the doc a call at the very least.

With your stomach, it's pretty common right before your period starts. I have a friend who used to vomit violently and felt like there were men w/jackhammers inside. Sometimes, mine gets very uncomfortable. With you, I think all that horrible stress is just making it worse. Try to keep yourself hydrated during all of this.

yes stress can affect your period sometimes.

Stress will do that. Take a day off and relax.
