Ladies, is it normal to gain weight after a hysterectomy?!

Question: I'm curious, as I have put on a few pounds since surgery. Is it to be expected?

If your ovaries were removed during the hysterectomy (complete hysterectomy), it's like going through menopause overnight. The ovaries are responsible for producing hormones (estrogen, progesterone, and androstenedione), when removed these levels drop dramatically.
One of the frequent complaints of women who have had a hysterectomy, is weight gain, particularly around the waist.
Ask your doctor and if the problem is hormone imbalance, then maybe he/she will customize your hormone therapy.
Good Luck!!

Yes! Hormone therapy does help. Those everyone should weight their options on that. Talk with your doctor about the risks.

I would assume that if you had a complete hysterectomy (ovaries removed as well) that weight gain can be expected due to the hormonal imbalance or lack thereof. Call your physician to discuss your options.
