I know the saleswomen at VS have usually asked "is this for your wife or girlfriend?" when I bought gifts there in the past. I want to be honest with the saleswoman about the panties being for me, and I need to know the best way to approach this. Would it make a difference to the saleswoman? Would I be treated profesionally like a female customer would?

if you're buying your first pair i wouldn't waste your money on an expensive pair at victoria's secret.
since you'll be trying it out for the first time go to a cheap store, like walmart, and and search around there without having to be attacked by sales people.
this way when you go to VS you'll know what you want to look for.
if you are so concerned, just do your lengerie shopping online

Dont waste your time with VS. They dont fit a guy very well at all. The gusset(crotch) and front are too narrow for a guy. Try barelythere style #2007, 2047; jockey for her-no pantyline promise bikini, hanes sheer bikini and hicut(micro-fiber). Also calvin klein micro-fiber bikini are nice. You can go to Macy's or JCPenny's and tell the sales woman they are for you and they will, most of the time, treat you professionally. Email me and we can chat more if you want.
